Interview with Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki

Fighting words of peace
Fear and anxiety, realism and optimism, love for Africa and passion in its defence — these were some of the sometimes conflicting emotions that surfaced in the course of the Al-Ahram Weekly interview with Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki. Egypt was an object of that fear and anxiety, which triggered Afewerki’s anger at the forces that were collaborating to destroy his country and his bitterness at the hypocrisy of the international community and the US, in particular. The emotions were mirrored in his face, which reflected at once the sensitivity of the applied artist and the pride and determination of the freedom fighter whose ardent patriotism drove him to leave the school of engineering in order to dedicate himself to the fight for his nation.

Video: Eritrean Foreign Ministry’s detailed Announcement about the detained British nationals

The Eritrean Foreign Ministry issued a Press Release on 7 June 2011 regarding the British nationals “detained in Eritrea” for the crimes and offences they committed against Eritrean sovereignty.

It is to be recalled that the Ministry in its press release of 8 April, 2011, noted that it refrained from delving into diplomatic, propaganda, press and PR campaigns, thus handling the matter with utmost prudence and patience, and that it would release detailed facts in due course.

IS THERE A LINK BETWEEN THE DETAINED BRITONS WITH ACTS OF ESPIONAGE AND ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS?

by TesfaNews,

The issue of the four ex-Royal Marine British nationals, who were arrested on late last December in Eritrea, has taken a new turn after the country’s president disclosed some shocking details of the incident.

According to his recent interview with the state-run TV, he disclosed that they were caught with“countless amounts of arms, including sniper rifles”which are commonly used for assassination purposes.

According to the Sun Newspaper, which has blown the story “out of proportion” in the first place, there were six of them (four ex-Marine guards and two civilian crew members) who works for a private security firm called Protection Vessels International (PVI) that provides a guarding service for merchant vessels while they sail through the pirate infested Gulf of Aden. While they were sailing through the Eritrean Red Sea, they opted for a fuel stop to Massawa port.

According to this same source, they were later approached by the Eritrean navy and asked for their papers before an exchange of shots were occurred.   During these battle, two of the ex-marines has escaped by make use of one of their guarding speed vessel while the remaining four Britons (two ex-Marine and two civilian crew members) has been detained.

No casualties has been reported on either side but the government on its 8th April Press Release accuses the Britons of “committing offences and mistakes against the country.”

Various concerned groups around the world, who happen to follow the story from the start, wanted, however, some kind of clarification on the issue before they throw their whole weight to the rescue of the convicts:

  1. Why the vessel that was guarded against the supposed “pirates” was found with ’countless amounts of arms’?
  2. Where was the destination?
  3. Is it related with acts of destabilizing the country?
  4. Knowing where the president’s new office and residence is located, that is the port city of Massawa, is there any relationship between the “sniper rifles” and an assassination attempt?
  5. As any vessel while entering the territory of the host country, why the guards fail to cooperate with the host’s navy when asked about documentations?
  6. Why the shoot out and who started it?
  7. Why the escape? They were supposed to guard the vessel in the first place not to abandon it and escape!
  8. How many of the Eritrean navy has died or injured during the shoot out and who is responsible?
  9. Why the British government is trying to cover up the whole issue with a threat of ‘robust action’ and negative media campaign against Eritrea?

The truth must come out by all means. The people and government of Eritrea has all the right to safe guard their security and territory. They also have the right to investigate the matter to the core regardless of the time it consumes.

The UK government shouldn’t have to worry about the safety of the four nationals unless it has something to do with the whole issue and fear for any kind implication.

They are in good hands and innocent until proven guilty!

Eritrea’s Red Sea Camels Beat Kenya 4 - 1

Eritrea and Kenya national teams Under 23 played in the All Africa Games qualifier held in Asmara, Eritrea this Sunday.

From early onset, the game was dominated by the towering and athletic Eritrean team. They held the Kenyan squad to just one goal, while punishing Kenyan goal keeper, Faruk Shikhilo, with 4 goals to victory.

The game was originally supposed to be played on Friday, but due to direct flight constraints from Nariobi to Asmara, the Kenyan Players arrived late into Saturday. The visiting athletes will stay the reminder of the week in Asmara and play friendly, non-qualifier games till their flight departs next Saturday.

Eritrea’s Red Sea Camels Under 23 have become a dominant team in East Africa and are among the few favorites to do well in this tournament. Depending on the outcome of a few games, the next team the Red Sea Camels face is either Tanzania or Uganda.

Multiple Standards that Harbor Subversion of the Rule of Law

written by Shabait admin

April 13, 2002, is a date on which the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC), a neutral Boundary Commission set up to arbitrate the border dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia, gave its final and binding verdict. Nine years have passed since the adjudication of the Boundary Commission’s ruling. Compliant with The Algiers Agreement and the modus operandi set by the Boundary Commission, the border dispute of the two countries should have, once and for all, been settled through delimitation and physical demarcation on the ground up to November 2003 as per the EEBC’s ruling. As the TPLF is commanded by its lords to quibble the rule of law, the decision, hindered from implementation, has thus far ensued unparalleled aftermath and waste of time. The Boundary Commission, whose mandate to implement the delimitation decision as planned was held back with a series of obstructive actions, officially announced that it concluded its mandate in the end of November 2007 by declaring the border virtually demarcated by the coordinates it had issued a year earlier.

Ethiopian Government New Policy Shift toward Eritrea

By Alula A.

Over the past few weeks, we have heard in different media outlet, the news of what Ethiopian Prime minster said in an interview to supposedly an Eritrean opposition radio. Somewhere in the interview the prime minster indicates a policy shift from no peace no war, to taking a preemptive strike and attempting to change a regime in Asmara. On this article I want to address why, of all time the Prime-minster chose to echo a sound of war. Is he just bluffing or something we should take seriously, and how we should react to such news, also is there any lesson we can learn from pervious rhetoric from this regime or any parallels we can draw and last but not least if the current wave of anti-dictators demonstrations that is swiping north African countries has any bearing on the issue.

[SUPPORT ERI ART'] Our Voices Soar High! Celebrate Eritrea 2011!

For over ten years, I couldn’t help it but swim in the oceans of tremendous admiration for Eritrean love and beauty, The reason? Well, through time I got pumped up with so much of Eritrean passion, that it dawned on me to fully appreciate Eritrean art. In the last seven years though, I didn’t expect such strong feelings from the Diaspora youth to stir me crazy. But, I found out the Diaspora youth wear their hearts in their sleeves. They don’t feel reluctant to wave the Eritrean flag in the dancing floors. They are not shy to dance the guayla. They feel they need to sing old Eritrean songs. And they reminisce to bring a smile to their battle hardened parents. They tell me plain out that they love Eritrea! They also tell me about their challenges of being Diaspora-Eritreans. I get to hear things that I never imagined before. They tell me about their challenges of being Eritrean-Diaspora youth. Our Diaspora youth Brothers/Sisters are the off springs of Eritrea’s long and hard won independence. Now, they want to go back home and salute their very Eritrea. “Their mother land,” as they put it! And they are good at their promises. Look at the wave of activities by the youth to date!
